UNC Chapel Hill caps their out-of-state student population at 18%. Coming to this large university from a small town in New Jersey, I have begun to view myself as somewhat of an outsider. When people ask where I am from, they expect me to say "Charlotte", "Raleigh", or "Durham". Since starting at UNC, adapting to this new place surrounded by people familiar with it has led me to some incredible learning experiences.
Try new things. Bring positive energy to everything you do.
Become independent. Being far from home will allow you to flourish.
Have a strong support network. Create one at school and maintain yours from home.
Travel! Take advantage of being unfamiliar with your surroundings by seeing it as an opportunity for fun day/weekend trips.
Somedays, you will feel out of place. Acknowledge your feelings, but know it will pass and these days are in the minority. There is a reason you came here and you will grow so much at this amazing school.
Laugh at yourself! If you pronounce something weird or have never heard of "Cook Out", know that this might be unheard of to someone else.
Be open-minded. Don't assume that your way of doing something is better than someone else's.
Ask questions. It can be hard to navigate a huge school with so many resources. If you need help, send an email to someone you think might be able to help you out. They will send you in the right direction or tell you who to talk to.
Get involved. Campus is huge and there are always fun activities, organizations, and events to be a part of. This is the best way to expand your network and make new friends.
Be friendly. Be the person to say hi to someone you vaguely know as you pass them on the quad. They probably recognize you too.
